All ribbon quality tests are performed according to SEMI Standard PV19-0811 – GUIDE FOR TESTING PHOTOVOLTAIC CONNECTOR RIBBON CHARACTERISTICS

Dimensional Testing – Inline non contact and contact copper core width and thickness testing. Continuous monitoring of copper core ( = the bare copper ribbon without the solder coating material ) allows us to provide our customer a product which is 100% inspected for width and thickness.

Tensile Test – The physical properties ( mechanical ) get checked on the finished and spooled product as it will be shipped to our customer. The standard tensile test results, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation refer to the copper core without the solder coating, which represent the true and important physical properties of a PV ribbon for our customer’s process.

Coating Thickness Test – The customer process specific requirement of solder coating material thickness is tested with an X-Ray coating thickness equipment. The different available specifications for coating thickness and coating material need dedicated equipment settings to allow accurate measurements and verify the right amount of solder material for the soldering process.

Finished Product Surface Test – An inline non contact surface detection system evaluates the PV ribbon surface 100%. All material provided for our customers is continuously inspected regarding surface defects.

Straightness Test– The camber characterizes the straightness of the PV ribbon. The camber test of soft annealed ribbon needs to be performed very carefully to avoid result errors. A standardized SEMI test procedure allows accurate and comparable measurements of us and our customers.

  • Soldering test on laboratory stringer soldering station to determine soldering parameters for certain ribbon and cell specifications.

Metallographic specimen

  • Grain structure investigation of soft annealed PV ribbon for strain cycle fatigue analysis.

Aging test

  • Solderability evaluation of aged material to simulate shelf life duration.

Bending test

  • Strain cycle fatigue analysis of ribbon performance/reliability in modules. Comparison of ribbon material with different grain structure.
